Ledderhose Disease

What is Ledderhose Disease?

Ledderhose disease, also known as plantar fibromatosis, is a rare, benign condition where fibrous nodules or lumps form in the thick band of tissue on the sole of the foot (the plantar fascia). These nodules can cause pain and discomfort, especially when walking, and may lead to toe curling or other mobility issues over time.

How LDRT works

Low-dose radiotherapy (LDRT) is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for Ledderhose disease, also known as plantar fibromatosis. The treatment works by targeting the proliferating fibroblasts that cause the benign thickening and nodules in the foot's connective tissue.

LDRT may:

  • Alter the development and growth rate

  • Shrink and soften the lumps in the sole of the foot

  • Relieve pain by softening and reducing the size of the nodules

  • Improve functionality and walking

Who Might Benefit

LDRT may be suitable for people who:

  • Have painful nodules

  • Have progressive or recurrent disease

  • Seek a non-invasive option

Your radiation oncologist will review your symptoms and hand examination to determine suitability.

What to Expect

  • Consultation and assessment – Your clinician reviews symptoms, medical history, and imaging.

  • Personalised plan – A tailored plan targets affected tissue while protecting healthy skin.

  • Treatment sessions – Each session lasts only a few minutes, is painless, and requires no anaesthetic.

  • Follow-up care – Your progress is monitored; a second short course may be offered several months later if needed.

Side Effects

Side effects are uncommon due to the very low radiation dose. Some people may experience mild dryness or temporary skin warmth in the treated area. These effects usually resolve quickly.
